Title: Sunfire SDS12
Post by: redwards on September 10, 2013, 12:25:51 AM
So, I'm casually "in the market" for a replacement sub - 12 inch, and y'all got me fired up for a Sunfire when I visited with my sick little Velo.  Is the Sunfire SDS12 an good model to target?  $500-600 new seems to be the going rate which works for me.  Use: movies 85%, music 15%.  Fully serviceable (parts still available)?
Grassy-ass,

Never used the Sds12 but have used the 12 inch signature true sub which is nice. For HT you might want to look at SVS and HSU. they are hard hitters for a great price. I use aan M&K MX 5000 and it is the best sub I have ever used but hard to find.

I just picked up a Def Tech Super Cube III (8" with two passive 8" drivers).  I use it in my office with a pair of satellites (Def Tech Studio 350s) in a two channel configuration.  I measured the installed performance (pink noise with an RTA) and found the trio to be flat, give or take a few db, from 25hz on up, except for a dip at 100hz.  My room is relatively small, but the power output from the sub is much more than sufficient, besting the 50 watt/ch receiver driving the satellites by a wide margin.  The new price was around $600-$700.

I had the same Def Tech sub MacGeek has. It's a very good sub with a very small footprint.

Thanks y'all.  I'm taking lots of notes.  All good leads (the rest of my system is Def Tech, so that's a good consideration).  I was expecting (hoping?) someone would reply "yeah, sds12 is kick ass and $600 or less is a steal!"   :P  Now I'm in the mood to go do some listening...if only there were all these options in one place around Pbg.  Ha!

Oh... it's been awhile. Still a good sub. I bought it from Carl. I was trying to remember who I sold it to. Thanks for jogging my memory.

Just hung out with Shayne from the forum today.  He has a pair of subs that might very well fit the bill that he made.  Send him a PM about details.  They are some of the better subs I  have ever heard but due to them being home made they weren't really worth mentioning because it isn't like you could go out and buy them.  He got a pair of Legacy Focus speakers and no longer needs a pair of subwoofers so get the details from him and what he wants.  I think you would be extremely pleased.  They do beat the pants off the Def Tech sub, which I love to death.  I don't think my extra subs fit the bill at all for HT but might be worth looking at as they are in the shop for consignment.  They are a pair of Velodyne 8 inch passive subs.  Ask Tom about them.  I like pairs of subs far more than just one for any application.
