Hello!
« on: December 18, 2013, 08:43:53 AM »
Just wanted to say hi and introduce myself.  My name is Matt and I'm out in Johnstown, PA.  I've been collecting and fixing vintage hifi (mostly solid state) since I was a teenager, which actually wasn't that long ago (25 now).  I do some work in a small shop in State College fixing turntables, receivers, etc as well as a handful of pinball machines.  I also do some audio repair work on the side out of the house.  I'm not a veteran expert, but I've been pretty successful with my knowledge thus far.  This forum looks like a nice place to visit.

I guess I can't edit my post.  To add a few other things about myself... I'm a fan of 70's Pioneer and Sansui gear as well as turntables and tape decks.  I have a modest collection of open reel tape decks.  When I was younger I was heavily into collecting vintage boomboxes and Walkmans.  I was also into Betamax and laserdisc/CED for a while.  Currently my main system consists of a Pioneer SX-1010, JBL L100's (with reproduction orange Quadrex grilles), Pioneer RT-1020, Pioneer CT-F1000, Pioneer SG-9500, dbx 120/3bx/224, Technics SL-110 w/SME 3009 arm, Pioneer H-R100.

Here is me a few years back with my HPM-1100's and my Sansui 9090db:

Yep, I also have a nice set of the HPM100's.  Currently both the HPM sets are in storage.  May sell the 1100's.

nice rig....that picture sure looks like something from the 1970s.  Don't worry about being 25, there are a few of us that might like to go back to that age (or even 40).  Do you ever get into Pittsburgh?

Welcome aboard!  I used to live in State College while studying at Penn State of course.  I am from the Lehigh Valley area in PA.

Great rig! Also like that you are into tapes, including reel to reel.  I have owned a couple of Ct-F1000s - how do you like yours?  That deck and the 1250 were among the best I have owned (when they worked right ).  Have never played with a 1020 RTR but looks to be the predecessor to the 909.  Noticed you have a DBX 224 - I am a fan of that too.   Welcome to the forum!

I went to Penn State as well. I'm originally from the reading area. I get into Pittsburgh here and there, mainly to see family and stop at Jerry's.

I like the F1000, also when it works. I have two of them. I don't know about you, but I get sibilance on tape when I record on some older Pioneer decks.  My most used deck is actually a TEAC A700.

I have the following open reel decks, all in nice shape and working: Otari mx-5050, Teac 3300S, Teac 4010gsl, Teac a-1500, Teac 3340, Akai gx-620, Akai gx-636, pioneer rt-1020l and two other Akai gx units whose models I forget.

I'm also into quadraphonic equipment, though it isn't hooked up right now. I have a Sansui QRX-7001 with an outboard JVC cd-4 demodulator. I use a Techniques 1200 modified with cardas tonearm wire and litz ICs, with an AT-12s cart. Works ok. I have the Technics 858 8track deck but hardly ever find decent Q8 tapes. Also have a nice Pioneer QX-9900 that needs to go to a good home.

That was a mouthful.
