New feet!
« on: January 08, 2010, 10:37:40 PM »
Some say rubber feet suck, and should ge replaced.  You can buy $50 Cardas blocks or go to your local craft store and buy wooden cubes pyramids, spheres and other not so practical shapes for if not pennies, then nickels each.  Buy a few and try them. if you don't like them at least thay were not 50 dollars.

Have you tried any??  If so let us know if they make a difference.  I like the vibrapods, I think they are $8.00 each, but they do make a diff. I use them on cd players, and under the speakers on my desk, imo a improvement.
I wanted to try them with a turntable, next time I get one I will try .

im using sperical points from parts express on my tt and am very happy with them.  they were $25.  i like your idea of wooden points,  a very cost effective approach.

I actually have blocks under most of my equipment.  I have a tendency to dismiss most of these tweaks, as other factors, such as speaker location, and just adequate power for playing speakers at the level you like seem to make a much greater difference.  Was there a difference?  Not a lot to my ears, much less that moving my speakers or listening position a few feet.

Have not tried this yet, but thought about steel/lucite/wood balls embedded in some blue tack might be another cheap way to try something else.

I like the vibrapods
..... Do the ball bearings on the vibracones really work? This looks real suspect for real life situations. Maybe in an enclosure. The pods look OK, but the cones?????
IN REALITY IT ONLY MATTERS WHAT IT SOUNDS LIKE TO YOU!!!!!

I'd say that I"m somewhat skeptical about the advantages of feet myself.

I could see it being important for a turntable or CD player, IF you're putting out a lot of mirror-shaking bass.  I do know that I've had a record skip before from someone jumping in the room... would feet have solved the problem?  donno.

I spiked my TT, only because the parts were cheap (like $15 shipped on special from PE) and because my rubber feet had  rotted out to the point that the TT was resting on it's motor housing, which caused a pretty good vibration.

I've seen guys that use wood blocks and such (hockey pucks are a swell idea) to accomplish the same thing.  Basically if you can either make point contact or use a high density surface (a hockey puck, granite slab, etc) between your source and the rest of the world then you can minimize vibration.

An even cheaper solution for isolation/absortion purposes is to use sorbathane feet. Taco Bell cheap and work great with turntables speakers, etc.

I also use hockey pucks under my gear.  For less than a buck a piece, I can't justify the price to improvement ratio of other solutions.

OCCD, you can't second it!
You brought the hockey puck recommendation to the table, and dmkovach added a second recommendation.

I could never decide to go soft or hard (sorthbane or pucks), so I never tried either.  I continue to procrastinate.  I definitely spike my big Polks!  That makes a difference.
